A China-friendly academic who previously ran UniSA is shaping up as a likely and \u201ccontentious\u201d candidate to be the University of Adelaide\u2019s next vice-chancellor, reports David Penberthy.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Penbo said during Thursday\u2019s Breaking @ 8 segment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe name that we are hearing is a very interesting one\u2026<\/p>

\u201cHe\u2019s a Danish-Australian academic who majored in biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen. He\u2019s well known to a lot of South Australians because prior to his current role as the vice-chancellor of the University of QLD, before that he was the vice-chancellor of the University of SA\u2026<\/p>

\u201cHis name is Peter H\u00f8j. He doesn\u2019t come without controversy though because his tenure at the University of QLD has attracted criticism that he\u2019s been too close to China. There was a big 4 Corners investigation a couple of years ago that established there were four courses on offer at the University of QLD about China\u2026 these courses were funded by Beijing, offered at an Australian university\u2026<\/p>

\u201cThe flip side of that is he did a stunning job at UQ attracting overseas students, overwhelmingly from China and this is the big hole in the University of Adelaide\u2019s budget right now\u2026<\/p>

\u201cProbably better than anyone Peter H\u00f8j is perfectly positioned to get the uni out of that hole\u2026 but at a time when Australians are becoming so much more revved up about the conduct of China\u2026 it would be a contentious choice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
