There\u2019s a time and a place for journos to go the jugular and to really try and nail someone to the wall, but I think on an issue like this you need to pull back a bit and recognise the fact that these are hugely complicated medical issues that none of us know intimately\u2026<\/p><p>\u201cThe minister himself is not a medico\u2026 so we need to get to the bottom of what is the thinking between these different groups of medical experts about how best to approach this.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier the minister said there was evidence in the US that lower volume paediatric cardiac surgery units had higher mortality rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve got a small unit \u2013 less than a hundred cases a year \u2013 you have three times the mortality \u2013 this is based on American data \u2013 three times the mortality of a 300-plus service.<\/p><p>\u201cThey are such complex procedures\u2026 it\u2019s a very specialised, complex area of care.
