Academics at the Australian National University have been advised to stop using the words \u201cmother\u201d and \u201cfather\u201d and use \u201cgestational parent\u201d and \u201cnon-birthing parent\u201d instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a handbook given to staff and quoted from by The Daily Telegraph<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen discussing childbirth, use the terms \u2018gestational\u2019 or \u2018birthing\u2019 parent rather than \u2018mother\u2019, and the terms \u2018non-gestational\u2019 or \u2018non-birthing\u2019 parent rather than \u2018father\u2019,\u201d the book says.<\/p>

\u201cWhile many students will identify as \u2018mothers\u2019 or \u2018fathers\u2019, using these terms alone to describe parenthood excludes those who do not identify with gender-binaries.<\/p>

\u201cThis non-gendered language is particularly important in clinical or abstract academic discussions of childbirth and parenthood, both to recognise the identities of students in the class, and to model inclusive behaviour for students entering clinical practice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Tutors and lecturers have also been recommended to use \u201cchestfeeding\u2019\u2019 instead of breastfeeding and \u201chuman or parent\u2019s milk\u2019\u2019 instead of \u201cmother\u2019s milk\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
