{"id":9032,"date":"2019-07-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/a-90-year-old-grandmother-just-graduated-from-uni-with-her-master-s\/"},"modified":"2019-07-29T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-29T00:00:00","slug":"a-90-year-old-grandmother-just-graduated-from-uni-with-her-master-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/lifestyle\/a-90-year-old-grandmother-just-graduated-from-uni-with-her-master-s\/","title":{"rendered":"A 90-Year-Old Grandmother Just Graduated From Uni With Her Master\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Image | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-29\/lorna-prendergast-with-her-granddaughters\/11354558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danielle Bonica<\/a><\/h6>\n<h3>A Victorian grandmother is inspiring would-be students after she received a Master of Ageing degree at age 90.<\/h3>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/mspgh.unimelb.edu.au\/ageing-industry-network\/newsletter-issue-10\/master-of-ageing-student-profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The University of Melbourne<\/a>, Lorna Prendergast decided to study online after watching her husband battle Parkinson\u2019s before he passed away in 2016:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen Mrs. Prendergast\u2019s husband became ill and&nbsp;was&nbsp;eventually&nbsp;admitted to a nursing home,&nbsp;it was a bleak time for the driven octogenarian, but she&nbsp;noticed something positive which peaked her interest.&nbsp;She saw&nbsp;a distinct pattern in&nbsp;how music affects memory&nbsp;and&nbsp;behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u202fstaff&nbsp;at the nursing home&nbsp;were happy to let&nbsp;Mrs. Prendergast&nbsp;play music DVD\u2019s for the residents,&nbsp;and she&nbsp;says she&nbsp;noticed that&nbsp;when Jim joined in the singing he&nbsp;would \u2018come back to be his old self for a while.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&nbsp;remembers&nbsp;that he would mostly be listening to&nbsp;Andre&nbsp;Rieu, British songs of WWII,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Christmas Carols,&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;Irish and Italian classics.
