Just after 9.35am on Wednesday 19 June, motorists reported a white Toyota Camry with a Victorian registration speeding on the Augusta Highway heading from Crystal Brook towards Port Augusta.<\/p>\n
Police patrols were notified, spotting the white Camry heading north near Mabray Creek 40kms south of Port Augusta. The Camry stolen from North Adelaide overnight wasn’t pursued by patrols for safety reasons.<\/p>\n
At 10.15am the Camry which appeared to have five youths in the vehicle was spotted again near the Wilmington turn-off still heading north.<\/p>\n
As the stolen Camry approached the town of Port Augusta, local police patrol cleared some local streets and busy intersections for safety reasons.<\/p>\n
A short time later the Camry entered the town with a speed zone of 50km\/h, the stolen car failed to slow and continued through multiple streets in excess of 100km\/h including travelling down Commercial Road, a one-way street the wrong way.<\/p>\n
Just before 10.30am the Camry tried to squeeze between a car and a pole on the Joy Baluch Bridge crashing, becoming wedged against the guard rail of the bridge.<\/p>\n
The five male occupants all tried to run from police but they were all quickly rounded up a short distance away.<\/p>\n
The teenagers aged 18, 17, two aged 16-years-old and one aged 15-years-old ,all from Adelaide were arrested and charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle.<\/p>\n
One of the 16-year-old boys who was driving the stolen car will be further charged with driving in a manner dangerous to the public and driving to evade police.<\/p>\n
Fortunately there were no injuries in the crash and only a small amount of damage to another vehicle driven by a member of the public, when the stolen car collided with it on the bridge.<\/p>\n
Further enquiries are continuing with the stolen car linked to thefts of petrol and other driving offences in Adelaide overnight.<\/p>\n
The Joy Baluch Bridge was closed to traffic for a short time, but has since reopened to tall traffic. There is no structural damage to the bridge other than minor damage to the guard rail.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
